Abstract

Our social behaviour is partly controlled by a reflexive system based on decisions founded on knowledge of facts and values, and partly by an impulsive system based on implicit associations. The extend in which each of these two systems controls our behaviour varies with circumstances and the kind of behaviour. This was demonstrated in an experiment using a cave Automatic Virtual Environment in which subjects (virtually) encountered a person with either a Morrocan or a Dutch appearance in a bus shelter. Galvanic skin respons as well as personal distance to the virtual person were independently but positively related to negative implicit associations with Morrocan people, but were not related to explicit opinions of the subjects.
