Abstract

Cerebellar disorders encompass a heterogeneous group of disorders with various aetiologies, ranging from acquired cerebellar lesions to genetic and non-genetic degenerative diseases. The consequences of cerebellar dysfunction typically manifest as motor symptoms, but cognitive and affective symptoms may also be present, known as the cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome (CCAS). Despite the growing understanding of the cerebellum’s role in cognition and affect, CCAS remains underexplored and insufficiently recognized in clinical practice. The aims of this thesis were to gain more insight into the cognitive and affective sequelae associated with cerebellar disorders. I elaborate on what CCAS entails, focusing on the cognitive domains it affects and the various factors that influence its manifestation. Furthermore, the validity of the assessment of CCAS is explored, and potential discrepancies that may arise are addressed. Also, insights of neuromodulation as a therapeutic intervention in cerebellar disorders are shared, including factors that may impact its effectiveness.
