Mediating and Broadcasting the Lingua Franca of Jazz in Postwar Germany and the Netherlands
Abstract
This article examines the hitherto neglected music archive of Dutch liberation songs composed in 1945 to celebrate the liberation from German occupation. The well-known Dutch composer, arranger and musician Jack Bulterman is used to show how the lingua franca of jazz was communicated via AFN Radio Munich. On the basis of so-called "intersonic clusters", remarkable overlaps in the Dutch and German appropriation of American jazz in the first years after the Second World War can be traced.
